What is Menopause?

Menopause, often referred to as ‘the change’ is when a woman’s menstruation cycle comes to an end; they no longer release an egg each month. During this time, there will be changes in the levels of estrogen, which will cause some side effects.  It is a natural part of life but is not openly spoken about due to the stigma attached. The average time for a woman to reach menopause is 45 to 55 years, and it can last up to 10 years. 

Perimenopause is a stage before menopause that sees a lowering in the levels of oestrogen being produced by the body and results in a woman having menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, brain fog, hair loss, and night sweats.

How can you raise awareness of menopause in the workplace?

Ensure staff receive training on what menopause is, its impacts on those going through it, and how one can support their colleagues; this is key to raising awareness. Implement a menopause policy showing your commitment. Openly discuss the topic of menopause to remove the stigma and show your support by being flexible; show you are serious by acknowledging health issues due to menopause; and, if necessary, make adjustments to the work environment.

What is the legislation for menopause at work?

While there is no legislation specifically supporting menopause, having a menopause-at-work policy in place ensures everyone is aware and supportive. However, it is protected by the Employment Equality Act under protected characteristics such as age. During the Menopause in the Workplace training course, we discuss case law and explore strategies for supporting menopause in the workplace. 

How do you support your colleagues dealing with menopause?

When you know someone is struggling with menopause, it’s important to educate yourself to really understand their challenges. You don’t have to live through it with them, but making them feel confident enough to openly discuss or seek help makes all the difference. Sometimes just being flexible, understanding, and adopting an open-door policy goes a long way. In this course, we examine ways to support your colleagues at work.

What is the menopause policy in the workplace?

While it is not mandatory to have a policy in place for menopause, it will show how serious and progressive you are as an organisation, to existing and potential new employees. This area is relatively new for organisations and a policy will state clear guidelines for the employer and employee to follow. Having a conversation with your manager will be key so they are fully aware of the situation and can offer a degree of flexibility during this time for example flexible working, providing a desk near a window or a fan if required. Wellbeing in the workplace should be a priority in your organisation and a manager’s support will be a testament to this. It is important to maintain a healthy diet, and keep moving so don’t be afraid to get up and move around the office or go outside for a walk on your break and stay hydrated. It is good to let your colleagues know so they can be your support if needed.
