FAQ’s

What is people management?

People management is the practice of recruiting, training, developing, engaging and retaining employees by optimising their talents to support business growth. People are the heart of most companies and without effective leadership, the functionality of the company would diminish.

A people manager’s goal is to empower employees to be the best version of themselves, which can have a huge impact on the company’s bottom line. If a team is poorly managed, this can negatively impact business and often lead to high employee turnover and burnout. A well-managed team will improve morale and optimise business opportunities.

How can I learn people management?

Several qualities make up an effective people manager. These would include integrity, communication, emotional intelligence, consciousness, and empowerment.

While lots of skills can be gained on the job it is important to gain best-practice knowledge and skills through the likes of classroom learning or e-learning. It is important to seek feedback from a coach/mentor who can point out areas of growth.

Is people management the same as HR?

People management focuses on people’s behaviour, skill and leadership whereas human resource management focuses on the practical aspects; legal, ethical and structural.

People management can be seen as a subcategory of HR as it includes elements of learning and development.

Both areas are involved in the recruitment process but the role of each differs slightly. People managers guide HR outlining the competencies required for different roles and HR seeks the ideal candidate.

People managers engage with HR regularly during probation, performance management and when identifying training needs.
